Kurtekin Fm

Period:
Paleogene

Age Interval:
Eocene-Oligocene (P? kr), M3a

Province:
SE Tajik (SE Pamir)

Type Locality and Naming

Includes in SE Murghab district (Gurdumdin type section)

Synonym: Kurtekinskaya Suite, Куртекинская свита, куртекинской свите

Reference section:

Lithology and Thickness

It consists of colorful conglomerates and sandstones with an incomplete thickness of 600 m. Also attributed to the Kurtekin Fm (куртекинской свите) are colorful deposits developed in the valley of the river Shind. They consist of interbedded conglomerates, sandstones, clay slates, marls, and limestones with admixtures of tuffaceous material. The incomplete thickness is 700 m.

Lithology Pattern:
Aus Conglomerate

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It lies with a sharp angular unconformity on various more ancient rocks. They lie with an angular unconformity on the rocks of the Lower? Carboniferous - Upper Triassic (Bazardarin Fm, Istyk Fm and others suites базардаринская, истыкская и др. свиты).

Upper contact

It is unconformably overlain by Quaternary formations.

Regional extent

It is found in small scattered outcrops in the Southeastern Pamir.

Fossils

It contains spores and pollen of Eocene-Oligocene appearance, by which the age of this suite is conditionally determined. In the cobbles of the conglomerates, Upper Jurassic limestones are contained, in the sandstones and clays, spores and pollen have been found. The imprint of the Paleogene period.

Age

The age of this suite is conditionally determined by spores and pollen of Eocene-Oligocene appearance. The latter conditionally determines the age of the characterized rocks. V. A. Shvolsman (1972, 1973) conditionally correlates the lower part of the rocks under consideration in the Shindy River with the Lower and Upper Cretaceous of the Karakoram and Afghanistan, while considering their upper part as Paleogene.
